Exciting first evenings for Vivo Kitchen

Something different from anything Sewickley has seen before!

Explore Sewickley had the opportunity to speak with Chef/Owner of Vivo Kitchen, Sam DiBattista, this week about how his first week of dinner service is going. His enthusiasm and compliments to our town were full of passion and excitement.

Although Sam had envisioned a “soft” opening and quiet start, the opposite happened: Vivo’s first dinner on Wednesday August 24th saw a full house. Every night since has been the same.

“We were packed and it was lovely to see,” says Sam, “We have unique menu items that we are excited to offer – in a simple, chic environment that we are proud of.” Some of Sam’s favorites dishes include: Roasted Marrow Bones with Grey Salt and Tamarind, not a dish you’ll see much in our area, but very much a European delicacy. Duroc pork with Chorizo and Peaches capitalizes on a special, fabulous marbled pork that results from hogs fed a particularly high quality diet. The Dry Aged Lamb Rib Chops are also exceptional cuts of meat. Everything in Sam’s kitchen, in fact, shows his strong roots in Italian cuisine: he starts with the best ingredients and treats them in a way that lets each natural flavor shine.

When we joined Sam for dinner, we ordered the Mushrooms with Raclette Cheese and Red Peppers, and the Tomato and Mozarella Salad for appetizers.  Both were delicate, light ways to start our meal – and they offered up thoughtful flavors and textures. Vivo’s hearty bread made a delicious companion.

Next we ate a delicious Whole Bronzino. It’s unusual to see a whole seabass roasted and served up on a plate here in the US, but it’s another typical European favorite which Vivo delivers in a pristine and flavorful way. We also had the Scallops with Pineapple and Country Ham Relish, served with green beans and quinoa. Everything was delicious and subtle and fresh.

Dessert included a wonderful peach and blueberry crostata, a chocolate pot de crème, and a French press pot of blood orange herbal tea.

Do we have you wondering “when” and “where” by now?

Vivo Kitchen is located on 432 Beaver Street and is open Tuesday through Saturday for dinner service starting at 6:00pm. Reservations are suggested but walk-ins are welcome. 412-259-8946 www.vivokitchen.com.

Smelling fresh paint lately?

Maybe you’ve caught wind of the new Sewickley scene. Take a peak, 5 new colors come to town.

Smart White and Cool Charcoal, Hometown Cream, Summer Sweet Corn, and Paradise (looks Village Green to me).  All specifically chosen and unique to town to make these buildings stand out. Improvements to town are always exciting but these buildings look like they are getting ready for back to school! Locals and visitors have been noticing and hype around the streets has been great to hear. We want to thank and recognize the efforts to House 15143, The Sewickley Hotel, the new Center for Young Musicians, and Sewickley Frame and Gallery. Looking good Sewickley, keep up the good work!

Changes Coming at The Naked Grape

This Saturday August 27th will be the last time dinner and drinks as you know it will be served at The Naked Grape.  Why, you ask?  Are they leaving?  Going out of business?  Nothing couldn’t be further from the truth.  The Naked Grape is evolving to bring you a new and exciting wine experience.  “Now it’s all about the wine.”

THE NAKED GRAPE ENOTECA IS COMING THIS FALL!

Unique to Sewickley, as well as within the United States, Enoteca is an Italian word used to describe a special type of local or regional wine shop that originated in Italy. The concept of an enoteca has spread to other countries and now Sewickley! You will be able to sample new imported wines never before available in Pennsylvania. These wines will be available to order for home consumption, which is currently a difficult process in the state of Pennsylvania. This “wine boutique” concept will allow you to enjoy “Lite Bites” at The Grape while you taste exceptional vineyard highlights and order your favorite choices with a variety of options for pick up or delivery!
The owner, Ryta, will now offer wine tasting classes, wine flight adventure nights, wine dinners and special events. They will still offer the ability to cater your events and parties, and will host several in the month of September and October.

SAME GRAPE SERVICE & AMBIENCE…NEW WINE EXPERIENCE!
STAY TUNED FOR MORE INFORMATION & OPENING DATE!

To prepare for this evolution, The Naked Grape Wine Bistro will take a temporary hiatus beginning August 28th and reopen in November.  Make reservations now to enjoy our fabulous menu and service before we evolve.

At The Naked Grape, you can relax in Tuscan-style ambience, sample great wines and be transported to another time and another place. Owners, David and Ryta traveled to Italy where they not only got engaged, but also fell in love.  With the casual atmosphere and welcoming feel of Tuscany, one can really feel David and Ryta’s passion for wine and this region. The Naked Grape wine-tasting room was designed to capture the beauty, warmth and Italian hospitality the couple experienced along the Mediterranean coast and brought back with them to Pittsburgh.

Their goal was to create a space where guests with varying degrees of knowledge and experience—from wine novice to wine expert—would feel at ease. “Escape to The Grape!” They willl greet your palate where it is and take your taste buds where they want to go. Stop by soon and invite the magic of Tuscany into your life.

Bailey & Bailey Owners Retiring After 16 Years

Although shoppers will be saddened to see the doors of Bailey & Bailey close, the unmistakable enthusiasm of local shop owners, Holly Miller and Elsa Cabiya makes one feel proud of their success in this town.

Explaining their passion for finding new adventures for themselves and with their families is not the end of the story for them, but a new beginning.  “We could have chosen to retire years ago, but wanted to support our town”, says Elsa.  ” Now with new stores on the way, we can successfully leave because there is a new vibrancy in town.”

With the final closing scheduled for September 30th, Bailey & Bailey will offer the last of it’s summer collection and some new fall items at discounted prices.  “The local support we have seen come to the store to shop has been heartwarming.  We genuinly will miss our cherished customers and have had fun helping them choose great outfits for their occasions.”

Shop Local for Back to School Supplies

It’s hard to believe that it is that time of year again.  Time to make the lists of all the back to school supplies that are needed.  This year instead of running to the mall or Target, how about coming to the Village of Sewickley?  There are lots of stores here that can fit the bill in your shopping quest.  Some ideas to get you thinking.  Rite Aid for pens, paper, markers, binders and tape.  Penguin Bookshop for your reading needs as well as notebooks and locker supplies.  The new Pink & Blue for toddler clothing and backpacks.  MakStudio for ‘tween clothing.  And Rosewood Boutique for the older girls.  And when you are worn out from all that shopping head to Sincerely Yogurt, Sewickley Confectionery or Ultimate Pastry for a sweet reward while summer is still here.
